Whittier Clubs Raise Money for Haiti Earthquake Relief

WHITTIER - Members of the Whittier Host Lions Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier recently took to the streets to raise more than $10,000 for Haiti earthquake relief.

About 20 club youths and staff members joined area Lions Club volunteers to collect money for disaster relief in Uptown Whittier.

They worked side by side blanketing Greenleaf Avenue collecting money for four hours.

"We were pleased to be able to support the Whittier Host Lions Club in their endeavor to raise money for disaster relief in Haiti," said Samantha Ridout, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier.

"It was a wonderful experience for our teens on many different levels," she said.

That's the motto of the art program, Meet the Masters at the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier.

Every Monday for the past two years, members of the club have been given the opportunity to explore the amazing world of art through this program, which is made possible though a grant from the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation.

Officials say the obvious choice to teach kids about drawing and painting is by showing them examples of the "masters."

"The program affords our club members the chance to learn about various artists and their style of artwork," said Deborah Arroyo, the club's director of development.

Boys & Girls Club of Whittier Chosen as One Of KIIS FM’S “12 Days of Giving” Charities
Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier created lasting lifetime memories when they were given the opportunity to play a few rounds of soccer, sign autographs, and take pictures with three players from the LA Galaxy; Sean Franklin, Edson Buddle, and Tony Sanneh. Galaxy players visited the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, as part of KIIS FM’s and Ryan Seacrest’s “12 Days of Giving.”

The Club was chosen to be one of the charities featured through the “12 Days of Giving” and Seacrest’s two million listeners and tweeters were invited to come by the Club on December 6, 2009 to donate a toy for the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier.

“These and other toys will be given out to Club members during our annual Christmas party on Wednesday, December 16th,” commented Samantha Ridout, Executive Director.

“It was awesome that KIIS FM came to the Club and let us kids sing. I also thought the Galaxy players were real fun to play soccer with”, said Club member James Anguiano, age 10, who attended yesterday’s event at the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier.

Dear Friends:

As a mother, the time I spent hearing about my children’s day was always so important.  I would ask them to share with me all of the details…their successes and challenges academically, physically, and socially.  At times I cried with them when there were small defeats and at other times I cheered as loud as I could when there were victories.  I sent them off each day knowing that there were no limits to what they could accomplish.
